There seems to be a worldwide explosion in the world of self help. Ads for mindfulness and audio recordings for self hypnosis. Whether you’re on Amazon or the App Store there are lots of experts raving about how their method can help you sleep better, defeat anxiety, smash depression and live the life you’ve always wanted. So which works better?....... mindfulness or self hypnosis?
Well that’s what I was pondering a few years ago when I experienced some difficulties of my own. Just when I thought things were going great in my life. I had embarked on my dream career working with children with disabilities and everything in my life seemed peachy.
But everything wasn’t peachy. Something wasn’t right and I couldn’t figure out what it was that was wrong. After a few weeks of almost unbearable low moods and periods of intense anxiety, I discovered I was suffering from clinical depression. I was given the bog standard NHS treatment of SSRI ant-depressants from my GP and sent on my way.
Now don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love the NHS. It’s an amazing institution which has looked after me and my family for many many years. But I wanted to see if there was a more natural alternative to Combating my condition.
So I set out on a quest to get some answers and learn some valuable strategies. That’s when I discovered two amazing ways to combat any type of emotional suffering. Two methods that still I use each and every day.
These are
Self Hypnosis
and
Mindfulness
I enrolled on a Counselling and hypnotherapy course and began learning about the power of our sub conscious. I must admit I was pretty sceptical before my first class. I just couldn’t understand how my state of awareness could be altered so much that my thoughts and behaviours could be changed. But that’s exactly what happened.
It wasnt some sinister mind control trick either like a lot of people have been led to believe by the media. It was really subtle and I was always in full control of what I was doing and thinking. It was just awesome and I quickly became hooked on the positive effects of hypnosis.
At around about the same time, I downloaded a mindfulness app on my phone and began listening to it every night at bedtime. It was so simple to do. All I had to do was focus on the present moment by resting my awareness on my breath. After a couple of weeks I was sleeping much better, had better moods, more energy and flowed through obstacles which would have stopped me in my tracks a few weeks earlier.
Since I began my journey with Hypnotherapy and Mindfulness I have gone from strength to strength. Every area of my life has dramatically improved and I am now in the amazing position where I can share my knowledge with other people and help those who are going through difficulties in their own lives.
So my answer to the question “Hypnosis or Mindfulnes? Which is better?”
They are both just as amazing as each other. If you don’t already practice Self Hypnosis or Mindfulness then I strongly recommend that you make some space for them in your life.
I believe that schools should be teaching this stuff as part of the national curriculum. Children are taught many valuable lessons at school, but I would love to see ‘Emotional Wellbeing’ become part of the standard educational system. I saw a video recently of children aged 5 learning some mindfulness techniques in school. This made me so happy to see that we are finally taking steps to nurture our children’s mental health.
So get yourself educated in mindfulness and Self Hypnosis. It will be the best thing you’ll ever do for yourself.
